The fertilized eggs are jet black, and develop into embryos and tadpoles very quickly. The tadpoles are known to be very cannibalistic, but as their parents deposit up to 1000 of them in a shallow puddle that is rapidly drying up, they need to turn into frogs quickly to survive and the most nourishing food available is their siblings. They will tolerate very warm water (up to 35c as shallow puddles get very hot in summer, and may reach metamorph stage in as little as 10 to 14 days.
