The young froglets are mottled brown with dark cross bars on their toes, and there is often a pale butterfly shaped making on the top of their head between their eyes. Baby Cane Toads also look like this, and it takes an expert to tell Cane Toad from Ornate metamorphs in the first weeks of life. Later, more characteristics of each species become obvious, and identification is easier.
